About the Position

SASRI has a vacancy for an Administrative Assistant in the Lowveld Biosecurity office in Malelane, Mpumalanga. Biosecurity monitor risk to the sugar industry by conducting pest and disease inspections and enforcing compliance to agreed Pest and Disease Control rules and regulations.

This position will be suitable for someone who is residing in or around Malelane. The person will be required to work three (3) mornings per week with a shut-down period over December.

The following are the key activities within the job:

  • Efficient handling of inward and outward communication with growers
  • Typing of monthly/annual reports, correspondence, statistical data etc
  • Spreadsheet preparation and management
  • Processing and maintaining of records
  • Minute taking at meetings
  • Basic bookkeeping
  • Receiving and dealing with incoming mail as appropriate
  • Filing of all correspondence and documents, ensuring easy access to information
  • Maintaining and controlling stationery and office stocks
  • Ordering operational requirements as required on Web-based Requisition System
  • Liaising with Finance Department re invoices, orders and supplier payment queries
  • Capturing employee leave applications on electronic system and submit payroll input data to the Payroll Department
  • Ensuring that all necessary occupational safety procedures are adhered to
  • Event co-ordination and liaison
  • General administration of the office including reception duties

The successful candidate should have:

  • A Secretarial and/or Office Management Diploma or equivalent

  • More than one years' experience in secretarial duties and office routines

  • Good knowledge of MsWord and MsExcel is essential

  • Knowledge of Agriculture would be advantageous

  • A valid driver's licence would be advantageous

  • Be able to converse in English and Afrikaans

  • Self-motivated; be able to work under minimum supervision and to show initiative when required
