About the Position

To manage all aspects relating to the 24-hour per day, 7 days per week operation of the Cane Testing Center. CTS attends to the determination of the total recoverable value content of the individual grower's cane deliveries as well as the total recoverable value entering the Mill. This is done for cane payment and factory control purposes. The manager will represent SASA at the mill area and ensure that SASA's missions and goals are conveyed to local stakeholders.


  • Ensure consistent and precise application of the Official Methods and accurate determination of the mass of recoverable value thereby enabling fair and accurate cane payment.

  • Ensure that requirements of the customers are prioritised and all performance targets in the service level agreement are met.

  • Ensure all occupational health and safety regulations are always adhered to thereby meeting the requirement of NOSA certification.

  • Maintain a strong team spirit focussed on achieving objectives at the lowest cost.

  • Ensure the sound management and integrity of all cane payment data and data storage facilities at the laboratory.

  • Preparation and monitoring of a detailed operational budget to ensure accurate variance analysis, cost control and to assist the MGB in setting a levy for the season to recover CTS costs.

  • Prepare and maintain asset replacement programme on behalf of the MGB.

  • Managing unionised employees, in a shift system to ensure an efficient and reliable operation.

    Requirements / Competencies:

  • Chemistry related 3-year tertiary qualification e.g. Bsc, [URL Removed] Chemical Eng., Nat. [URL Removed] Chemistry

  • 5 - 8 years in a management position together with customer interface at a significant level as well as at least 3 years' experience in a laboratory environment

  • Minimum 5 - 8 years in a similar role

    • Computer literacy is important, proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint and MS Word

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational

  • Must have a valid drivers' license with own transport

  • Self-management is key
